DeFlip Side is Tops in 2015 PCLI Media Awards

Author and journalist Christopher DeFilippis has taken top honors in the 2015 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, winning first place in the category “Social Media: Blog Created and Maintained by an Individual” for his website, DeFlip Side.

The award was given for the overall content featured on DeFlip Side (, including a 15-year archive of the DeFlip Side radio show, which has been exploring science, literature and the broader culture of Science Fiction since 2001. The site also features regular book and film reviews.

DeFilippis, who created the site, accepted the PCLI award on Thursday, June 4, during the annual PCLI Media Awards dinner at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. The Press Club of Long Island is a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. This is the third time the Press Club has honored DeFlip Side.

In 2013 the radio show took first place in the media awards category “Radio—Non-Local News/Feature” for DeFlip Side #125: Immortal Thoughts, which explored the life-extending possibilities of full-brain plastination. It took second place in the same category in 2014 for DeFlip Side #138: Chaika’s Flight, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the pioneering flight of Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.

DeFilippis originally began as a showcase for his DeFlip Side radio segments, which are featured monthly on “Destinies: The Voice of Science Fiction,” one the country’s longest running Science Fiction radio programs. Destinies is hosted by Dr. Howard Margolin and airs Friday nights at 11:30 p.m. on WUSB 90.1 FM, Stony Brook.

But the website has expanded to accommodate DeFilippis’s growing DeFlip Side Media brand, which includes independent publishing through DeFlip Side Press, and podcast production, with a regular feature on the Quantum Leap Podcast. DeFilippis wrote the official Quantum Leap tie-in novel Foreknowledge in 1998.

DeFlip Side also extends congratulations to the other bloggers honored in the category. Veteran food reporter and editor Alan J. Wax took second place for his website Corks, Caps & Taps. And Margaret Leigh Sinrod and Diane Masciale received third place honors for the website SciTech Now, featuring episodes of that program, which airs on New York public television station WLIW21. WLIW is a member of the WNET family of companies, which also includes Channel 13 in New York.

DeFilippis began his journalism career as a radio reporter, anchor and producer at a Missouri NPR affiliate. In the decades following, he has worked in print journalism, film and television production, most recently as Managing Producer for the Editorial Services Department at Cablevision Systems Corp., producing televised editorial segments that reached more than 3 million viewers twice weekly on five networks across the N.Y. Tri-State area. His work at Cablevision was also recognized with multiple PCLI Media Awards.

But DeFilippis began DeFlip Side mainly as an excuse to return to his first love, radio.
